Cooking Through Grief | How A Community Found Healing After Yom Kippur
There are moments in life when words feel too heavy to carry, when grief presses so deeply that even naming it feels impossible. After the loss our community in Manchester experienced on Yom Kippur, I found myself numb — unable to weep, unable to taste, unable to feel.
And yet, somehow, food found its way back to me.
In Jewish tradition, food is not just sustenance; it is memory, connection, and comfort. A bowl of chicken soup, a slice of honey cake, a loaf of freshly baked challah — these dishes carry stories of resilience across generations. They invite us to sit together at a table, to remember, to mourn, and, slowly, to heal.
